World of Warcraft Warlock Gear – General Notes |
 Leveling a Warlock in World of Warcraft is quite fun, when compared to other classes, since you have a large repertoire of spells to take your enemies down with. And you never get lonely! You'll always have a cute little companion at your side, be it a fiery (and noisy) imp or a sexy succubus.
Fortunately for warlocks, gear is easier to get when leveling, than for other classes. This includes both other cloth classes, priests and mages.

Whereas priests will have to focus on healing or shadow gear, but will be required to take both at some point while leveling, mages are also in a competition to get spell damage gear when a warlock, a shadow priest, or a balance druid is in the same party. Warlocks have it easier while leveling, since you'll mostly be aiming for specific +shadow or +fire damage, which although harder to find, is easier to get when you do (since you only have one class to battle for each - shadow priests for shadow damage and fire mages for fire damage - and there's a chance that even if you end up in a party with a priest or mage, they won't be shadow or fire specced.)
In order to help you out with leveling your warlock in World of Warcraft, I decided to create a list of items you can find in Azeroth that are useful. At lower levels, most of the warlock gear you will find will probably be common with that of the other cloth classes, as it is rarely specialized (+fire, +shadow, +healing, etc) at that level in pre-expansion World of Warcraft.
Depending on your spec, you will want to look for different stats in your leveling gear. Affliction and Shadowbolt specced warlocks will want as much +shadow damage as possible, over +spell damage. Full destruction warlocks will look for a combination of +shadow and +fire, depending on your prefered attack pattern. But since +fire and +shadow damage are not as easy to get as simple +spell damage, feel free to go for that type of gear when possible.
Stamina will also be an important factor, as stamina gives you HP and for a warlock, HP = Mana due to life tap. Actually, the trick of playing a warlock right is balancing your HP and MP when needed as well as gaining them from your opponents. For the same reason, Intellect will be almost as important as stamina. If you go for a crit-based destruction spec, Int becomes even more important. Spirit and mp5/hp5 should be secondary stats to help you regenerate faster in downtimes. Here's how you should build up your gear in accordance to your spec and what exactly you'll be doing in Azeroth and Outland:
Destruction Warlock (Improved Shadowbolt and Ruin) - Spell Damage -> Shadow/Fire Damage -> Spell Critical Hit Chance -> Stamina -> Intellect -> Spell Hit Chance -> Spirit/mp5/hp5/otherstuff
Affliction Warlock - Spell Damage -> Shadow Damage -> Stamina -> Intellect -> Spell Hit Chance -> Spell Critical Hit Chance -> Spirit/hp5/mp5/otherstuff
- When you are leveling your warlock, Stamina gains more importance and so does Spirit, by a smaller margin.
- When engaged in PVP, regardless of your level, Stamina and Resillience gain more importance.
- Stamina loses a bit in importance and you'll need more Spell Hit and Spell Penetration.
However you put it though, Spell Damage or specific Spell Damage (+Shadow, +Fire) should be on top of the list. If you can fix the other stats as well, good for you.
