World of Warcraft Mage Gear – General Notes
World of Warcraft's glass cannon, as it is often referred to, the mage is one of the best DPS (Damage Per Second) dealers.
Although limited to wearing cloth gear and weilding only Staves, Daggers, Swords and Wands (well actually it's the same as Warlocks and Priests, but Priests can weild Maces instead of Swords) they make up through their amazingly powerful spells.
When you start hunting for gear as a mage in World of Warcraft, you'll have to focus on several factors such as your talent spec, your playing style and what exactly you'll be doing in the game at that particular level. The primary stats you should go for on your gear are +spell damage for DPS, and +fire/frost/arcane depending on what talent tree you're planning on climbing up on. +spell critical is important, especially for fire mages that are more reliant on burst damage and Intellect is also useful for an increased mana pool and even more spell critical hits.
Last but not least, Stamina and Spirit come in as good secondary stats, each having its use in different situations. Stamina is good if you intend to PVP a lot besides leveling, or for those intense AOE situations where you need those extra Health Points to be able to pull it off. Spirit is good for reducing downtimes when grinding and leveling, but then again a mage's downtime is already quite low, so, when possible, take Int or Sta over Spi.
Unfortunately there aren't that many specialized +fire, +arcane or +frost items out there, so you'll have to combine the ones you find with plain +spell damage gear, regardless of your spec. Anyways, let's get started with our mage guide. Here's a short overview, after which we'll dip right in:
