World of Warcraft Best Mage Pre-Raiding Gear Guide
With the introduction of The Burning Crusade, players have an entire new world to go through and levels 60 to 70 will deck you out with some great gear from this new world. As a mage, you'll have a lot of options to choose from, with excellent pre-raid items coming from quests, normal and heroic instances, reputation rewards, BoE drops and craftable items.
What I wanted to do with this list is give my fellow mages an idea on what they should be aiming for if they want to start raiding properly. Most raiding guilds require new applicants to have at least the best pre-raid gear in order to be accepted. But you can also use this mage pre-raid gear guide in order to find an upgrade for a specific item slot, even if you're already raiding but missing out on some slots. Besides the best available mage gear, I also mentioned some "placeholder" items that are easy-to-get and can serve as replacements before you can get your hands on that one specific item you've been drooling for :).

The list below contains what I found to be some of the most useful mage items before Karazhan and Gruul (and higher raids of course).
Not all items have a "Level 70" requirement, as there are some items that can be used to great effect since the earlier 60s. Some items are profession-specific, mentioned as "BoP Craftable". You can't get your hands on these unless you have that particular profession.

The Battlecast set has higher stats and gives you more Intellect, making the Hood and Pants tempting for an Arcane lock with Mind Mastery or a crit-based fire mage, however the Spellstrike has higher Spell Effects and Damage, although the sheer stats on it are lower. I'd also say that the set bonus of Spellstrike is better than Battlecast for mages so take that into consideration when spending all your gold crafting one of these items. Anyway, if you think you'll be using a head item for some time, get a [Glyph of Power] enchanted on it for an extra boost:

If you're not a tailor, a good placeholder for them are the [Spaulders of the Torn-heart], which you can get from a chain quest in Shadowmoon Valley (you'll need a group for it and its preceding quests though). Once you get to Honored with Aldor or Scryer, you can get [Inscription of Discipline] or [Inscription of the Orb] respectively as a shoulder enchant. At exalted, you'll have the option to enchant your shoulder slot with [Greater Inscription of Discipline] and [Greater Inscription of the Orb] so try and get the shoulders you aim for before reaching this reputation level:

You will eventually want to get the money for either [Spellstrike Pants] or [Battlecast Pants]. I'd personally go for Spellstrike, although they have smaller stats and the same amount of spell damage. They have one more gem slot though, spell hit and spell critical ratings and a consistently better set bonus than the Battlecast one. One good start-up trinket to replace those old level 60 ones, [Vengeance of the Illidari], can be acquired from a group quest in Hellfire Peninsula. However, your main target, especially as a deep fire mage or a Shatter Frost mage should be [Shiffar's Nexus-Horn]. I found it to proc often enough to make it almost irreplaceable and since it has no 'Use' ability, you won't have to worry about forgetting to proc it (and let's face it, we often forget to proc our trinkets in mid-fight) and you won't have to worry about the shared 'Use' cooldown with another trinket. The other trinket could be either [Quagmirran's Eye] in Slave Pens Heroic or [Icon of the Silver Crescent], obtainable with Heroic badges. [Figurine - Living Ruby Serpent] and its high stamina/no passive effects looks more like a warlock trinket, but you can use it as a placeholder if you've got nothing to put in the other slot yet (it's BoP Jewelcrafting though). Since there are no staves with specific spell damage like +fire, +arcane, +frost, getting the G'eras offhand of choice becomes a priority for any mage. Since there are no specific damage school main hands, you'll have to aim for +spell damage and stats. The [Blade of Wizardry] is an awesome main hand, but it's best used in conjunction with [Quagmirran's Eye] for the superb spell haste increase. If you've got the money (and yes, 2 Primal Nethers + 8 Primal Mights + other mats cost a hell lot) get [Eternium Runed Blade] or simply grind Honor Hold/Thrallmar rep like a madman for [Blade of the Archmage] or [Stormcaller] respectively (they're called differently for Horde and Alliance, but as you can see they're virtually the same item). For Alliance mages, a good start-up placeholder is [Nexus Torch], which has a fairly good drop rate in The Shattered Halls (Normal) so it shouldn't be too tough to get either. The [Wand of the Netherwing], has no Intellect, but the DPS, Stamina and Spell Damage on it makes it worthwile grinding normal Shadow Labs. [The Black Stalk] is a wand that will keep you comfy for a while even after you start raiding, but it's harder to get since it's a rare drop from Heroic Underbog:
